Roof Gutters work to route water off of your roof, maintaining your gutters is a necessary part of the overall maintenance of your property. Clogged gutters can cause water to collect on the roof which can manifest into a leak and create an attractive environment for termites. You want to ensure that your water draining system is working effectively and isn’t going to cause any damage to your property. Here are a few tips on how to correctly clean your gutter.
Safety is essential
Before you can even be cleaning your gutter, you must make sure that you can do the task safely. This means using a sturdy ladder on level ground. Ensure that the ladder is always fixed in place to avoid unexpected injuries. Remember to always wear gloves. While cleaning you might encounter a rough edge or sharp objects, thick work gloves can protect you from injuring yourself.
Use your hands/ hand trowel
If your gutter has collected a large amount of debris bring a bucket or trashcan up with you and scoop the debris out. Working your way around the roof and throwing the dirt into the bucket. This is an effective way of clearing the bulk of the debris.
Utilize a hose
Once the bulk of the dirt has been removed you can rinse out your gutter. Use a garden hose with a pistol-grip trigger spray nozzle. This nozzle will allow you to adjust pressure accordingly. This is useful when cleaning the gutter may require more water pressure.
Unclog the downspouts
The downspouts also require cleaning because leaves and debris can clog it up. This will cause the water not to drain properly and it can cause the gutter to sag. Flush the downspouts out to clean them though.
Clean them semi-annually
Schedule a time to clean your gutters twice a year. In maintaining them regularly you can reduce corrosion in the gutters and expand their lifespan.
